  • Ian Cameron returned to The Yanko

Ian Cameron returned home in March, after completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Sydney and working with NAB Agribusiness in the graduate program. He worked in Wagga Wagga and Deniliquin as an Agribusiness Analyst before returning home in time for shearing.

He recently assisted in running the AWI National Merino Challenge held in Adelaide on 19 and 20 May, an event held annually for secondary and tertiary students to both compete and more importantly learn from people in the Merino Industry.

Keep an eye out for him at the upcoming events.

  • The Yanko Surplus Ewes in hot demand

At the 15th annual John Wells Memorial store sheep sale at Jerilderie, top price of $252 was paid to Hugh and Heather Cameron, “The Yanko”, Jerilderie for their pen of 434 May/June 2016 drop ewes, September-shorn and The Yanko-blood when purchased by producers from Bendigo.

The Cameron’s were presented with the perpetual John Wells Memorial Shield by Caroline Heath, Jerilderie, sister of the late John Wells.

Mr Cameron said he was ‘thrilled’ he and Heather had offered the top price pen and thus being awarded the perpetual trophy.

“It is something we have been trying to win for a long time,” he said.

“Given how well we knew John it is a very moving experience.”

Mr Cameron thought the sale result was very strong and on par with what has been happening at other venues.

Vendor Ross Wells, Willandra Merinos, Jerilderie, confirmed those comments.

“It is one of the strongest sales I have seen for a long time,” Mr Wells reflected on the conclusion of the auction.

  • Shearing, the season and lambing…

After a slow start to the year followed by a welcome autumn break we have seen good feed growth in the Riverina. This has allowed lambing to go forward with no additional feeding requirements for lactating ewes and this has shown in percentages at marking. The maidens achieved a lambing percentage of 114% with an overall stud and flock average of 120%. Shearing was held in early March and with wool price at record levels it was a delight to see the shed running. Fleece weights were consistent and the clip averaging 20.2 microns. Young rams have benefited from the early break, providing them a base to grow out from with ample feed to keep up to growing bodies. We are pleased with the direction the sale team is going and look forward to presenting them on Thursday 28th September.
