Breeding Objectives

Posted on July 13, 2016

Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBV’s) are available to help clients with selection of rams. Breeding values provide clients with greater information on each ram, helping to select sires
possessing the traits that best suit their operation and have the biggest impact on their bottom line. We endeavour to provide clients with the most up to date tools for the selection of their genetics, and with the help of ASBVs, rams can be assessed for fleece, carcase and fertility traits.

The Yanko is using the Merino Production Plus index to maintain micron and increase fleece weight, body weight, reproduction, eye muscle depth and fat depth traits. For our own selection of rams we use a combination of visual and objective measures to produce rams displaying stylish medium wool, with good length of staple and a high wool cut along with good carcase traits; providing an all-round, general purpose sheep suitable to all climates.
